Video: With the Sea in Mind

Fun Video from yet another recent trip to Baja. A collaboration between the Be Kind Vibes and myself. We show a quick surf session and beach cleanup. Featured on www.theinertia.com.

"Matt Hickey and Drew McGill score some fun surf on a day trip in Baja. Uncrowded point on MLK Day 2015. After surfing they take some time to walk around and pick up a few pieces of trash and say 'hi' to the local dogs.

::We shot this quick video on a day trip to Mexico. It was super windy and we almost didn't even film. The surf was empty and we knew that if we didn't get any footage we would regret it. By the time we started filming there was absolutely nobody in the water; switching off filming and getting waves we kept an eye out for set waves and any sign of danger in the water. Most of the time after a session at home or while visiting a new spot we try and pick up a few pieces of trash around the immediate area, leaving the spot a little bit more pristine than when we arrived. The locals down there are all good vibes and after a few tacos and a beer we packed up and headed for the border::"

Two days into the year... Two different countries...

On Thursday I took a day trip on a whim and ended up south of Rosarito. We filled up with tacos at a favorite spot and headed down to the beach for a stroll with some beers and looked at the surf. It was nice to feel the free air and think about how early in the year it was and what lies ahead. Only the second day of the year and I had already experienced the sunset in two different countries...

Bringing in the New Year

Bringing in the New Year

How do you want to bring in the new year and what do you want to do? Good questions... Endless answers.

Last year I took a job to photograph a huge production of a party in Pacific Beach. Not really my style, even then. I struggled to finish shooting through till midnight, almost convincing myself multiple times to leave the scene early. In true form I stayed through and left almost immediatly after I got the 'money' mid-night shot. I vowed not to do that again unless the money was too good to turn down.

Fast forward one year and I wanted nothing to do with a new year's party of that magnitude.

Camping sounded like a good way to bring on 2015. So, we got a group of friends together and went camping. Nothing like a start to a new year than truly connecting with nature.

Posted are some images from last year and a few from this year.

Here is to a New Year!

Conversations around the fire and a private meeting in the van. This is where ideas are sprung, even though it was in the 30s that night.

Everyone kept really close to the fire, intrigued with ideas.

Star trails galore. At one point me and another guy walked down into a riverbed, it felt like our hands were going to freeze off as we gathered extra wood for the fire. That mission didn't last too long.
